Boersma, Riikinkukko puutarhassa – Mathias Withoosin Rooma | The Peacock in the Garden – Mathias Withoos and Rome

A magical city, inspiring fellow artists, the glow of companionship! Mathias Withoos (1627–1703) travelled to Rome and became a member of the Bentvueghels group, a community of Dutch artists. The young artists, from poets to painters, celebrated and worked together. Rome left a lasting impression on Withoos's art. Even after returning home, he continued to return to ancient landscapes and garden moods in his works. The Dutch art historian Albert Boersma has written an introductory article about Withoos and the world of his seventeenth-century artistic community.
