This thesis investigetes the interplay between human rights and development. It explores the role of human rights (as standards, as principles, as rhetoric) and their transformative potential in terms of challenging the status quo in favour of marginalised rights-holders. The study contains an analysis of the role of human rights in three food-related interventions in Malawi representing different approaches to development and food security: (1) a charity-based approach); (2) a rights-based approach); (3) a legal human rights approach.
